Superfood In Focus: Spinach

Spinach has long been considered a superfood for the health conscious, and for good reason! It has many practical benefits, too, such as the fact that it is readily available in shops and is a quick and easy addition to many meals with minimal prep – so what vitamins and minerals does it contain?

The leaves (which you can use raw in salads at baby leaf size, or add to soups, stews and more when they are full-sized) are jam-packed with iron – a key nutrient in the health of red blood cells and the transportation of oxygen around the body. It is also a great source of vitamins K, A, C and B6, as well as carotenoids and antioxidants, which help to boost the body’s immunity, and are linked to the prevention of a number of different ailments.

As well as all of this, spinach is low in fat and cholesterol, so is a great choice for those looking to lose weight and adopt a healthier lifestyle, as well as containing plenty of fibre, which helps towards good digestive health. Overall, this is one leaf it is well worth adding to your weekly shop!
