You could be forgiven for overlooking the tiny chia seed when searching for a quick-fix health-boost. Despite their size, however, Chia seeds pack a punch when it comes to goodness. As well as fibre, protein and calcium, they contain omega-3 fatty acids – an essential nutrient for overall health and one also hailed for its anti-inflammatory properties. “Chia seeds have more omega-3 fatty acid than any other plant,” says nutritionist Shona Wilkinson, “and this makes them a great alternative to fish.”
Still not convinced? Chia seeds offer a really simple way to increase your whole grain intake. Containing vital nutrients, whole grains host myriad benefits including promoting friendly gut bacteria. They are also well known as a slow-release carbohydrate, so you’ll find yourself reaching for the snack cupboard less often – great news if you’re trying to lose weight or maintain a healthy one.
Nutritionist Rick Hay is also an advocate of the mighty chia, “I love them,” he says. “They expand in liquid so keep you feeling full, plus the fibre helps with blood sugar regulation and digestive function.”
